Jewel Box Print by Noelle Phares
“Jewel Box” was commissioned by the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art as part of Noelle Phares’s 2024 exhibition that explored the Colorado River. High above the river in Glenwood Canyon lies a travertine grotto, a hanging lake. It’s often visited nowadays but back before the region was well traveled it must have felt a welcome surprise to those who stumbled upon it. A jewel box fringed in Bog Orchid and Columbine in the high, rugged alpine. The aptly named Hanging Lake is a relic of geologic activity; it and other hanging lakes are formed when a portion of mountain shears off of a fault to leave a basin that collects water over time. Legend has it that it was first discovered by men searching for gold in the area who found a dead horse at the mouth of the gulch leading up to it from the Colorado.
